Rufus Kulam is a reservoir of about 100 hectare, it is situated 30 km north of Arugam Bay and 25 km north of Pottuvil, but a little bit hidden, in 5 km distance from the East Coast. It is one of the most picturesque lakes in Sri Lanka and due to its remote location and lack of tourist facilities a really untouched highly attractive destination off the beaten track. The eastern half of the lake is spotted with rock bolders, the western half is surrounded by open grassland close to the jungles called Kanchikudi, which had been a stronghold of separatist guerilla fighters during the decades of civil war. Today the area is peacefull in every sense of the word. This is an area of wildlife outside national parks. Besides cattle and buffalo herds of local Tamil shepherds wild animals such as spotted deer and elephants come to the lake frequently.

destination: Rufus Kulam
Rufus Kulam is not only an idyllic setting, it is a perfect spot for wildlife observation and for meeting local fishermen and shepherds who are untouched by the effects of the tourism industry.
For a reasonable tip they will arrange a small sightseeing boat trip, but be aware, the boat is small and could be attacked by crocodiles. You have good chances to observe freshwater crocodiles at Rufus Kulam, but better keep distance. A problem will be coordination with the fishermen, because they cannot understand English. But Team Sightseeinglanka could assist you and tell them not to take any risks.
Wildlife for free
For nature lovers Rufus Kulam offers the rare opportunity to observe an exceptional density of wildlife in open grassland area without any Wildlife Department charges. You do not even need a jeep, you can sit and wait at the lake side and observe elephants coming to the drinking or even bathing in the morning or late afternoon. It’s a perfect wildlife destination for a half-day trip from Arugam Bay or Okanda.
