Peradinya is a suburb of Kandy, located about 5 km west of Kandy’s town centre. Besides Colombo, Peradeniya is the most renowned univerity in Sri Lanka. One of its institutions is the famous “Royal Botanical Garden”, it is said to have been founded already 1371 by King Vikramabahu III, who had a palace in this area with attached gardens. The British founder was Alexander Moon in 1821. Peradeniya Botanical Gardens are situated within a slope of the Maweli, Sri Lanka’s biggest river. The 59 hectares large garden harbours more than 4000 plant species and is famous for its orchid house and the variety of trees from all over the world in particular. Peradeniya Botanical Gardens are not really an insider tipp. On the contrary, they are included in almost all round tour itineraries.
But even if you try to avoid most touristed destinations, for a nature lover the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya are a must-see. This is one of the most important Botanical Gardens in the tropics at all and due to its location in the cooler climate in Kandy it harbours not only tropical plants. You can study Sri Lankan spices as well as Southamerican trees here.
Walking around in the well-kept greens can be quite restful and delightful anyway.
