Namal Uyana is Sri Lanka's largest iron wood sanctuary and the bigget pink quartz mountain in Asia. The Sinhalese name of the highly venerated wood species is Naa. This tree usually grows in the highland at about 1200 m height. But it is found in large numbers in Namal Uyana in the dry zone lowlands due to two factors. Namal Uyana is comparatively rich in water resources, and the trees are said to have planted by locals centuries ago. They are believed to have been criminal offenders who could choose to take asylum in this religious sanctuary. Ruins of ancient monastic structures such as stupas and tree temples and inscriptions can still be seen in the Namal Uyana forest reserve. The other outstanding feature of Namal Uyana is the rose quartz range. The rose quartz has a history of more than 550 millions of years. It is said that because of the excellent quality of the Namal Uyana rose quartz is was used for parts of the Taj Mahal.

destination: Namal Uyana
Namal Uyana can be visited on a half day excusion from Dambulla or Sigiriya. There is a jungle trail from the car park to the central area of the Naa tree forest sanctuary and the ancient ruins and the rose quartz mountain. A modern Buddha sculpture is placed on that hill halfway to the top. It offers a perfect panorama.
Namal Uyana is a possible half-day excursion, too, for our guests who stay in Rasvehera monastery for a budget wildlife experience and for being integrated in typical rural life.
Our village life guest in Nelumpure can also reach Namal Uyana on a day excursion and for example combine it with visits in Aukana and Rasvehera or in Dambulla.
