Habarana is located close to Sigiriya and halfway between Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, right in the centre of the Cultural Triangle zone. Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks and Ritigala Forest Reserve are close-by. Greenery and wildlife of the immidiate surrounding are an attraction in itself. The population of the village is about 8,000. The nearby reservoir called Habarana Wewa invites hikers and offers opportunities watching elephants bathing. Habarana became popular for organizing special professional village life packages for tourists. Due to the nice setting they are recommendable indeed for those who want to return to their comfortable hotel rooms in the evening and do not dare to stay overnight in less comfortable houses of locals. For those who intend to experience untouristed real village life for two days or more we recommend the not too far away Nelumpure, truly a secluded farming village.

Due to its location at the intersection of the the A6 Kandy-Trincomalee and A 11 Anuradhapura-Polonnaruwa mainroads, Habarana is a convenient base for day excursions to the cultural and natural attractions in the North-Central Province.
Habarana has the best choice of mid-range hotels aimed at package tourists. Some of the lodges (Habarana Lodge and Habarana Village) are quite attractive due to the inclusion of forested and water areas.
Elephant back riding is a main tourist activitiy in this small city. It can be done along the small path around the scenic area of the lake and elsewhere. A small village temple is built on pillars, which is typical for the Kandy period. It has some Kandy paintings, too.
Habarana eco park
Habarana became a wildlife attraction in itself due to migrating elephants in this area. Chances are high to spot wild elephants in the surrounding, even along the main roads, throughout the year. But due to Habarana’s location in the vicinity of Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks it is a meeting points of elephant groups seasonally, too. Advantage of the Habarana eco park is that no high National Park tickets will be charged here.
village life day excursions
Very popular one-day-itineraries in the Habarana area are village-life package tours. They usually include visiting paddy farming field, studying protection methods against elephant rampage, taking part in traditional cooking methods, lunch with locals including juggery, bullock cart ride or a canoe ride. Three-hours programms, for example only oxcart rides to a rural village, are available, too.
Team Sightseeinglanka can arrange those standard village life itineraries in Habarana for you. As already mentioned, we also offer real village life stays in completely untouristed areas with simple local accommodation in houses of local farmer families.
