Usually January is dry in the south-west of the island and still rainy in the dryzone in the north and east but with less pricipitation than in ecember and January. Some sunny days can also be expected in the Cultural Triangle. Because of this normally friendly weather conditions, January is high season in Sri Lanka's tourism industry, not only in the south-west.
However, Sri Lanka's climate seasons have become more and more unpredictable during recent years. Very unusual weather conditions effected the island during the last week.

"Nine people were killed and two injured in mudslides Friday in the tea-growing Badulla district when their houses were buried in landslides, said Udaya Kumara, an official at the state disaster management center. Ten others were missing and rescue operations were temporarily halted due to risk of further landslides, he said.
