Our December 2014 series about hidden Cultural Triangle heritage sites off the beaten path already described six interesting places well worth a visit though less well-known than other heritage sites in the North-Central Province and neighbouring areas.
Yapahuwa is the best-preserved medieval fortification of Sri Lanka.
Thanthirimale has Sri Lanka’s second largest ancient recling Buddha.
Hatthikuchchi is a romantic place, which was the setting of the Sirisanghabo-story.
Medirigiriya has the best-preserved circular temple from the Anuradhapura period .

Ritigala, the highest moutain in the Cultural Triangle, with an ancient forest monastery at its eastern slope, is not really unknown to tourists any more, but it's still a silent place, where you can avoid the crowds and study remnants of an interesting part of Sinhalese Buddhist history in an amazing natural setting.
