Though after the boxing day Tsunami of 2014 initially construction projects close to the beach were prohibited, this turned out to be unrealistic. Indeed, there are many more accommodations close to the beach now than before. It can and should be critized indeed. But does it mean a risk for travellers?
Think about it: Before 2014, there had been no large-scale Indian Ocean Tsunami for at least 2000 years. And after 2014 a new warning system was installed and already proved to work well. For example, on the 11th of April 2012 it was activated following a strong earthquake off the west coast of Sumatra, though no Tsunami hit Sri Lanka later on.
