Whoever is looking for a new unexplored virgin wilderness location for camping may be interested in our offers to travel to the Thoppigala Mountain Park, but must accept lantern light instead of electricity. Thoppigala offers undisturbed nature experiences due to its isolated, silent location in the Eastern Province, 325 km north-east of Colombo and 50 km north-west of district capital Batticaloa.
This dryzone area that has been a traditional hunting ground of aboriginal Wedda people. In recent history it was once a stronghold of separatist guerilla fighters during the times of civil war and the place where they lost a first decisive battle 2007 before their final defeat in 2009. Later on, the Sri Lankan Army Eastern Command’s ambition was creating and opening the "Thoppigala Heritage Park" and the "Thoppigala monument" to develop this region by attracting visitors from all parts of the country. In April 2013, the Thoppigala Monument was finally opened by the Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the president’s brother. This monument was sponsored by the Dilmah Conservation. It is the biggest memorial in Sri Lanka.
The landmark of the heritage park is the spectacularly steep "tooth" of an isolated monad rock that is called Thoppigala by Sinhalese and once was called "Baron’s Cap" by the British.
