The final results of yesterday's general elections are not yet published, but it's already clear, that the UNP of incumbent Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe won more votes and more seats in parliament than the former majority coalition UPFA of Ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa.
But Sri Lanka is expecting a hung parliament with neither the UNP nor the UPFA gaining a majority in the 225-seat national parliament. The UNP won in 11 of 22 districts including Colombo, which is the largest one, and surprisingly in Polonnaruwa, the home district of President Sirisena. The UPFA won in 8 districts.
The UPFA not only lost their large majority but only came second. Sri Lanka's Ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa has conceded defeat, the AFP news agency reported already before the first official result in any district had been published. "My dream of becoming prime minister has faded away," Rajapakse is said to have told AFP. "I am conceding. We have lost a good fight."
