Maithripala Sirisena is to be sworn in as the new President of Sri Lanka at 6.00 pm local time (12.30 pm GMT). He won 51.3% of the total vote in yesterday’s presidential elections and about 449,000 more votes than his opponent Mahinda Rajapakse (47.6%), who is said to have conceded defeat this morning already before all districts’ final results have been published.
Almost no acts of violence are reported until now, an attack on a polling on the Jaffna peninsula caused no casualties.
U.S. State Department spokesman Jen Psaki said last night, the U.S. was encouraged by reports that election observers have been able to carry out their monitoring without hindrance.
