The 73-years old Maduluwave Sobhitha Thera, chief incumbent of the Kotte Naga Maha Vihara, died while undergoing treatment in Singapore on Sunday. The government declared national mourning. Tomorrow, Thursday 12th November, the cremation ceremony will be held with full state honours on Thursday near the country's parliament building. Thursday has also been a declared a holiday for students of schools in the Kotte Sri Jayawardenapura area.
Maduluwave Sobhitha was an influential Buddhist monk Sri Lankan politics, usually advocating moderate views. He played a key role in the movement that worked for constitutional changes to reduce the powers in the hands of the president. For this purpose he supported establishing a cross-party alliance and electing a new President and in January 2015 and a national unity government in his support in August 2015. Nevertheless, the defeated former president Mahinda Rajapaksa also paid tribute to the highly respected monk.
