Giovanni de' Marignolli was legate of Pope Benedict XII. to the Mongol Khan’s imperial court in China in the 14th century, looking for support against Muslim enemies. Like Marco Polo one generation earlier he travelled by land through Central Asia and on back by ship across the Indian Ocean. Though he was forced to spend four months in captivity of a local Muslim ruler in the south of Sri Lanka he did not hesitate to adopt Muslim views about the splendour and significance od Siri Pada, the mountain called “Adam`s Peak” by Muslims and Christians.
