Colombo’s skyline is growing every year, but still the twin towers of Colombo’s World Trade Centre are the most prominent buildings, with a height of 152 m. The Hyatt Regency Hotel, already under construction, will be slightly taller.
However, in short distance from Colombo’s WTC, there is a new mega project that will overshadow their dimensions and even surpass the New York Freedom tower (415 m). Colombo’s future landmark is planned by the Krrish Group, an Indian real-estate company. The Krrish Square is currently ranked as the 10th largest skyscraper project in the world. Four supertall towers will be built here, the largest one for commercial purposes shall be used commercial offices and a 7-star hotel. Completion of this tower 1 was scheduled for 2018.
But it is uncertain whether this mega project will be started at all. The Krrish Group did not begin its construction work by the stipulated time period in 2012. This resulted in a controversy about “broken promises”. Since March 2013, the project has been frozen as the company has not yet honoured its payments to the Urban Development Authority. The Sri Lankan Government is considering to hand over the land to another investor.
