If you are looking for a comfortable hillcountry accommodation not to far from Kandy, Hunas Falls is definitely the first choice. For budget travellers we can recommend a small hotel in Bambarella, which is located in the Knuckles Range, too.
A middle-class alternative in the centre of the highlands is the Kothmale Holiday Resort, which is conveniently located half an hour away from Kandy City, 37 km south of Kandy, on the way to Nuwara Eliya. Almost all most-noted highland places of interest are within daytrip distance from Kothmale
The hotel, nevertheless far away from busy towns and roads, is situated in a nice location and presents a calm ambiance, too. It`s surrounded by forest covered mountains with some tea plantation at their slopes and paddy fields in the Kothmale valley. Some rooms have balconies opening to the highland views.
The hotel offers an airconditioned restaurant that can accommodate about 150 guests, an airy dining verandah, a conference room, a tennis court, billiards room, a large rectangular swimming pool and two additional children’s pools for kids between 5 and 10 years. However, it must be said, that the large pool and the surrounding terrace could be better maintained, the entire pool area more inviting. Bath rooms are only basic. So it’s not the maintenance quality but the quiet location and natural surroundings that make the Kothmale Holiday Resort attractive. It's a recommendable accommodation for those looking for a scenic and tranquil place and for salubrious air and climate. The Kothmale Holiday Resort has a large garden area of about 2.5 hectares with bushes and shade trees. It`s a good place for birdwatchers in particular.
Similar to the more luxurious and splendid Hunas Falls, the Kothmale Holiday Resort has become a popular sport for honeymooners, both foreign and Sri Lankan.
The history of the hotel is connected with the construction of the Kotmale Dam, which is part of the Mahaweli irrigation scheme. When the Swedish Engineers left Kotmale, they left a complex of cottages and dining hall facilities, which then made up the Kothmale Holiday Resort, later on managed by the Ceylon Hotels Corporation.
