Kappalady Lagoon location
At the northern end of Kalpitiya, close to Kalpitiya village is the Kalpitiya Lagoon opening to the Dutch Bay. (The Dutch Bay to the north-east of Kalpitiya is the nexus between Puttalam Lagoon and the ocean). Kalpitiya Lagoon is ideal for kite surfing because it it shallow. There are many different kitesurfing spots, not only for beginners but also for advanced enthusiasts. During the monsoon months June to September, Kalpitiya offers strong winds of more than 20 knots almost every day and 24 hours a day. A second season is the anti-monsoon between December and February with winds of 10 to 20 knots, more comfortable for beginners.
The largest kite- and surf-school at the Kalpitiya Lagoon is called De Silva Windresort Kalpitiya. It is located on the eastern side of the lagoon. Windforlove is a kitesurfing school helping you to find private or guesthouse accommodation, it is located south of the Kalpitiya lagoon.
There is another lagoon quite popular among kitesurfers, situated 15 km further south . The Kappalady Lagoon is a narrow stripe, at its northern end opening to the ocean (east side of Kalpitiya Island). It’s smaller than Kalpitiya Lagoon and can be crowded sometimes, but otherwise it’s a perfect place for kitesurfers. The Elements Resort is a kitesurfing school with very nice own accommodation facilities at the picturesque beach of Kappalady Lagoon.
Kalpitiya is both a village and a whole 44 km long and 1700 hectares large spit of land separating the vast Puttalam Lagoon from the Indian Ocean. Due to its serene beauty it has attracted more visitors in recent years. Part of the marine sanctuary is Bar Reef just north of Kalpitiyala, the reef has the greatest biodiversity among coral reefs of South Asia. Kalpitiya is famous for dolphin watching and seasonal whale watching, too. But the tourism sector, that has developped Kalpitiya as a new destination recently, now offers a new attraction, the best kite surfing opportunities in South Asia.
