In 2014, the arrival number of tourists from the People’s Republic of China was 128,000, compared to 10,000 in 2008 and 21,000 in 2012. In the first half of 2015 alone, already 93,000 guests arrived from China. This increase led to a boom of new hotels and restaurants and casinos more specified on services for Chinese speakers. Srilankan Airlines recently launched new flights from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
Despite the stumbling of China’s economy in the last month, the estimated figure of 200,000 arrivals from China still seems to be realistic, because there were only few cancellations until now. However, future expansions are expected to be less spectacular than in recent years.
Rich Chinese tourists like to combine a round trip in Sri Lanka with beach holidays on the Maldives. But members of the Chinese middle lass prefer Sri Lankan beach resorts, in order to reduce costs.
