If you are looking for Sri Lankan products that are support local communities, environment and health, the so-called “Good Market” near Colombo should be on your travel agenda. By the way, it´s one of Sri Lanka’s most modern and cleanest market areas, too, in a pleasant park-like surrounding.
The Good market is held every Thursday between 12 and 8 pm at Diyatha Uyana in Battaramulla, 11 km east-southeast from Colombo Fort. Actually, Battaramulla belongs to Sri Lanka’s official capital, Kotte Sri Jayawardenepura. The English name of the Goood market’s location, Diyatha Uyana, is “Water Edge” and makes sense: It is a semi-peninsula at the north-western corner of Kotte’s Diyawanna Lake, in the centre of which the Parliament is situated..
Colombo’s “Good Market” offers typical Sri Lankan sweets, pickles, vegetables, fruit juices and organic tea. You can also buy bags and clothes and sandals. It’s the perfect place for finding fair-trade products.
